Psalm 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the almighty. 2. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”
Times of uncertainty will come. During a lifetime we can expect to experience moments met with celebration, joy and gladness and others met with grief, sorrow, and sadness. Sometimes the ups outnumber the downs and other times it seems difficulties consistently jockey to be out front, squelching hope on the horizon. When speaking of bad times, I’ve heard it said, “when it rains it pours”, I’ve also heard it said, “and this too shall pass” which may be speaking of the good or the bad, nothing rarely stays the same therefore change is to be expected. So, what do we do with change? What do we do with the unexpected?
We can take a look at David’s reaction in times of crisis and fear in the 91st psalm. David says, “I Will say of the Lord. Let’s stop there. David is addressing the words of his mouth and the act of his will. I have found that in times of fear what my heart knows and what my head is telling me can be two very different things. A disconnect is occurring between my head and my heart. On the one hand my heart is assured that my God is big enough to handle whatever giant may be in my way. Not only is He able but He is also willing to go before me. My head on the other hand has ears and eyes that see and hear things in the physical that can make a person weak in the knees. So how do you get our heart and our mind on the same page? How do we get them to connect?
Scripture tells us If you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth you shall be saved (Romans 10:9). What we are reading here is the power found in the act of confessing, speaking and declaring God’s Word. When we open our mouth, (which takes an act of the will) we are submitting our mind (because one can’t speak without the mind) to the truth of God’s Word. We are not denying the facts of the circumstances around us but instead trumping those circumstances with the powerful truth of God’s written Word. In essence we by faith are speaking, causing our physical body/mind to line up with what God says. In doing this a supernatural response takes place as we are catapulted into the spiritual realm.
John 6:63 says this:
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh conveys no benefit [it is of no account]. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life [providing eternal life].
Gods Word is life giving! David began Psalm 91 by reminding himself He was abiding in the presence of the Most High, the Shadow of the Almighty, then declaratively spoke, I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress; My God in Him will I trust. Surrounded by his enemies, seeing the plight of the circumstances, David found his certainty in the God he served. He connected with God by abiding in His presence and when fear encroached on his peace, he boldly proclaimed God as his refuge and confessed where his trust was grounded.
In today’s times of uncertainty, I encourage you to make your confession in whom you trust! Fear may threaten your peace of mind, circumstances overwhelm your emotion but God has a place of refuge for you until the storm passes. He is in control. Give your faith a voice today and see if fear doesn’t have to make a fast retreat.
