What is your Quest?

What does it mean to SEEK? In the Hebrew seek, is baqash; it means to diligently look for, to search earnestly until the object of the search is located.  It occurs some 210 times in the Bible.

During the month of December,  Pastor has set our vision to focus on “Seek”.  In Matthew 2:1 we are told of the Wise Men, led by His star in the east. Their quest? To locate the newborn King, so that they might open all their treasures before him and Worship Him.   The question is posed, What is your quest in life? In other words what do you pursue, what do you diligently seek after? What star are you following? What good treasures are you laying down before the object of your affections?

When I think of the word seek I see energy and time, effort, and sacrifice.  The wise men were discerners of the times, alert and aware of the season they were living in. The star a beacon in their quest to search out and find the King. We are told in Psalm 14:2

The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God

Do we understand the most important thing?  What matters or should I say who matters to you is important. The enemy of your soul would like nothing more than to fill your day with endless searches that matter little.  With a million activities to steal your thoughts away from the King. The enemy would like for you to think and feel that you are wasting your time and efforts when you spend it searching out the King of Kings.

I’m reminded of the story of Martha and Mary,(Luke 10:38-41) two sisters, very different from each other. We see them hosting Jesus and His disciples in their home.  One is busy preparing the meal, setting the table and busying herself with all things hospitable. Truly she believed this to be the necessary part. Then we see Mary, the other sister, sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing His Word.  Martha not to be taken advantage of implored Jesus to chastise Mary and have her get to work helping her.  But she did not get the response expected from Jesus. Instead he uses her name twice in his response! “Martha,Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things.  But one thing is needed and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.

Mary was seeking Jesus, she had found the object of her affection and was hearing His Word, in other words she was pursuing her quest, He was who she was following, He was her star, her source of light and life.  His name was Jesus! In Him all things pertaining to life are found.

Will you allow your quest in life to be Jesus? Will you find room for him in the busy season of your life? Will you recognize the Necessary part?  Or will you treat Him like a side order, something you pick up if you have a little extra time.

  • Psalm 119:2 Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart

  • Psalm 34:10 The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing

  • Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Prayer: Lord forgive me for anyway I’ve placed you last.  When I’ve treated you less than you deserve.  I lay down myself to you today, for your glory. Teach me to wait on you, to linger at your feet. Teach me to seek you, the important part, show me how to love you as you deserve.

In Jesus name, Amen
