The Certainty of the Most High

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.     Psalm 91:1

Psalm 91 is known as the chapter of Divine Protection.  During 2014 it quickly became a staple for me personally when I was diagnosed with a serious health issue that threatened my very life. The words of those in health care did not offer many positive outcomes as they took a wait and see approach to the treatments given me. So along with doing what they ask of me I began to meditate on the verses of Psalm 91 and declare it every day.  I still continue to speak these verses every evening not only for myself but for my family and church family.  I’m happy to testify that God intervened in my situation and turned my death sentence into a life sentence.

Many of you reading this can identify with feelings associated with receiving frightening, unexpected news.  Feelings of uncertainty about the future can bring uneasy emotions and anxious thoughts. But As a child of God, we do not have to “live” in a state of fear.  It is written that God did not give us a spirit of fear but of Power and of love and of a sound mind (II Timothy 1:7). So where does fear come from?  Fear, which has torment comes from Satan.  God does not bring you torment, so therefore fear is from the enemy.

The names of God are associated with His character traits. Having an understanding of His names brings us greater insight into the attributes and nature of the God we serve.  Psalms 91, verse one begins by addressing God as the MOST HIGH.  In calling Him the Most High we are declaring that there is no other name, no other God that can be named that comes even close to Him.  If you have a problem and you need an answer you do not waste time with the underlings you go straight to the One who is in charge, the One who has all power.  When you pray Psalm 91 you are letting Him Know that you see Him as the MOST HIGH, he executes the highest power in every realm.

The second name we are given is ALMIGHTY.  Almighty is translated Shadday meaning All-Powerful.  In this description you can also find these meanings:

  •      Mighty

  •  Unconquerable

  •   The all-sufficient God, eternally capable of being all that His people need

When you are feeling overwhelmed by the uncertainty of life, I encourage you to read, and confess out loud Psalm 91.  Be mindful that you are not calling out in vain but instead you are calling out to the mighty, unconquerable, all sufficient God.  He has everything you need and is more than capable of bringing order to the chaos around you.  It is easy to operate under the illusion that we are somehow in control of our surroundings but the truth is we are not.  During times of uncertainty we are reminded how needy we are as a people.  But, as a child of God we abide in the secret place of the Most High and in the shadow of the Almighty.  We are not left to scrape and claw for security, He is our security.  The Most High has you in his care, He is all sufficient and has never lost a battle.  You win because He won for you.  Rest in His shadow today, knowing he is fighting for you.

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, I declare that you are God Most High, there is none above you.  I surrender every circumstance of my life to you today and I know that you are working on my behalf.  Forgive me for when I have deceived myself by thinking I control my surroundings.  You are all sufficient for my every need.  In Jesus name.  Amen.
